THE 525E ELECTRIC DRIVE
DESIGNED TO INSPIRE
Island Spirit is transitioning not only the sailing catamarans to E-Drive systems, we are also doing so with our commercial tour catamaran offerings under the Austhai Marine brand.
Therefore, we have developed a scalable E-Drive system that can be applied across all of our product offerings utilizing standard components, architecture and software.
In the development phase of the Island Spirit 525 we took into account designing for E-Drive from the very beginning. This covers many aspects of the design process including but not limited too:
- Minimize the vessel weight through the exclusive use of composites and not use heavy marine plywood in the build.
- Efficient hull design to minimize the power required to move the boat through the water.
- Utilize commercially available EV technology
- Design to over perform
How does all this play out in the system level design? Well we are not at liberty to share all of the details of the design system as we hold those proprietary, we can share a fair amount of general information. The general E-Drive system is outlined below:
The drive system has been designed to ensure that there is performance to spare, in doing so the system incorporates the following characteristics:
- Powerful range extender that will charge the system at 55kW
- Powerful drive motors with a 65kW (88 hp) rated power
- Large E-drive system storage with 210kWh
- Supplemental solar charging up to 4.8 kW
The design of the boat is very efficient. It will only require only 37kW to power the boat at 8 knots giving sufficient run time in daily charter operations and unlimited range while running the range extender.
